R2675 RailRoad Flying Scotsman Decoder Installation
The following guide is to assist you with the fitting of a standard Hornby decoder into the R2675 RailRoad Flying Scotsman locomotive.
Step 1. Carefully uncouple and remove the tender (1) from the rear of the locomotive. Move the front bogie to one side to gain access to the main fixing screw (2). Gently unscrew this and carefully remove the body by sliding the chassis forwards and then gently pulling the chassis away from the body.
Step 2. Remove the decoder from the protective packaging, taking care not to handle the PCB directly as this will cause irreparable damage due to static electricity. It is important to protect the decoder by wrapping the PCB with insulating tape.
Step 3. To prepare the decoder, remove the plug and separate the red, black, orange and grey wires. The rest can but cut short and insulated with insulation tape.. Strip the red, black, orange and grey wires and lightly "tin" (thin coating of solder) the exposed wires. Tinning the wires will make the installation easier. Care must be taken when soldering not to breathe in the fumes. Caution must also be taken as the soldering iron will get extremely hot and will burn if touched.
Step 4. Locate the red (1) and black (2) wires from the locomotives pickups.
Step 5. Solder together the two red wires from the pick-ups (1). Then solder together the two black wires from the pick-ups (2). The result will resemble the image below.
Step 6. Solder the red wire from the decoder to the two red wires on the loco (1). Then solder the black wire from the decoder to the two black wires on the locomotive (2). The orange and grey decoder wires can then be soldered to the capacitor legs as shown below (3). Insulate the joints using insulation tape.
Step 7. Once the decoder is connected place the locomotive on the programming track and test to make sure that the installation has been successful. Remember that the decoder has a default number of “3” and it is therefore recommended that you code the locomotive to the number you require and test again.
Step 8. Once you are satisfied that the decoder is functioning correctly locate the decoder in the small cut out near the front of the locomotive, ensuring that it is away from moving parts. Once installed, carefully position all wires so that they do not touch any moving parts. Use insulating tape to hold them in place if required. Test again to ensure that no wires foul any moving parts.
Step 9. Replace the body, and secure using the fixing screw as shown in Step 1. Test once more to ensure that the installation has been totally successful.
